Initiative and referendum laws, adopted,
allowing people of Oregon, to place measures on ballot,
and recall existing laws by popular vote.
Oregon is first state to adopt such laws.

McCants Stewart, first Black admitted to Oregon Bar.

Voters' Pamphlet first published.

George Hardin,
is the first Black officer,
appointed to the Portland Police Bureau.

1905
Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition,
is held in Portland, celebrating 100 years,
since the visit of Lewis and Clark.

Sarah A. Evans,
appointed first City Market Inspector in the U.S.,
marks the beginning of the
consumer-protection movement.

Association of Oregon Counties first organized.

Lola Baldwin,
is named head of the newly formed
Women's Division (Portland),
becoming first female Civil Service
police officer in United States.

The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association,
is reorganized.

Women's suffrage, is adopted in Oregon.

South jetty at the mouth of the Columbia,
is completed to facilitate shipping,
on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.

Ku Klux Klan organized in Oregon.

Compulsory education law passed.

Astoria, downtown, burns to the ground.
Over 200 business establishments,
were destroyed and thirty blocks burned.

Beatrice Cannady,
first Black woman admitted to Oregon Bar.

Japanese American Citizen's League is established.

1923

The three DeAutremont brothers, in what was called
the nation's last great train robbery,
dynamited the Southern Pacific's Gold Special,
when it passed through a tunnel in
The Siskiyou Mountians, near Ashland.
In fact, the train carried no gold. Four
trainmen were killed, but the brothers
escaped into the mountians and were not captured
until four years later. It was Oregon's most
sensational criminal case.

The Tillamook Burn,
one of the nation's worst forest disasters,
wipes out 240,000 acres of Oregon's finest timber.

State Capitol, built in 1876, is destroyed by fire.

Nan Wood Honeyman, elected,
Oregon's first woman representative in Congress.

1937
Bonneville Dam completed,
providing Oregon with a great source
of hydroelectric power.

New Capitol in Salem, is completed.

Shipbuilding boom starts at Portland.

1942
Women are finially called to jury duty,
in a federal court in Oregon.

Rural School Bill passed.

Equalization measure, encourages consolidation,
and raises standards of rural schools.

1947
Gov. Earl Snell,
Sec. of State Robert S. Farrell Jr.,
and Pres. of the Senate Marshall E. Cornett,
killed in private plane crash.

1948
Memorial Day Flood, completely destroys Vanport,
a suburban Portland city of 17,500,
built to house wartime workers.

1949
Fair Employment Practices Commission, first in a series of State Civil Rights Legislation.

Dorothy McCullough Lee
is elected first woman mayor, in Portland.

1952
Constitutional amendment, approved,
assuring equal representation in State Legislature.

1953
The legislature repealed all preexisting statutes,
and enacted the Oregon Revised Statutes.

1954
McNary Dam, on The Columbia River,
dedicated by President, Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1955
William Faulkner,
visited for a few days of discussions and meetings,
with students at the University of Oregon, in Eugene.

1956
Congress authorizes Interstate freeway system.

 Congress terminates Klamath Indian Tribe.

Camp Tillamook was started in 1956,
with the acquisition of three old barracks buildings,
at the Blimp Base in Tillamook, Oregon.
This work/study camp, was designed to serve a
younger population of delinquent youth.

1957
The Legislature, bestowed upon Dr. John McLoughlin,
the honorary title of "Father of Oregon",
in recognition of his great contributions,
to the early development of the Oregon Country.

1958
Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington,
arts in education organization.
Young Audiences work is multi-disciplinary,
embracing all art forms.

1959
Mark O. Hatfield, becomes the new govener of Oregon,
on January 17.

1960
Maurine Neuberger,
Oregon's first woman to be elected to U.S. Senate;
3rd in U.S.

1961
Freeway completed, connecting Salem and Portland.

1962
October 12 (Columbus Day),
storm causes extensive damage.
Since then, known as The Columbus Day Storm.

1963
Heceta Head Lighthouse, turned on in 1894.
One of the most beautiful lighthouses and settings,
and the most powerful marine light,
on the Oregon Coast, 1.2 million candlepower.
Last keeper at the lighthouse was Ossie Allik,
who had the distinction of being the last keeper,
at Tillamook and Heceta Head.
He turned the lights off July 20, 1963,
when it became automated.

1964
Death penalty abolished.

1965
Another work/study camp,
was built on State Parks land on the mid-Oregon
coast near Florence in 1965.
This program initially was used to serve
academically challenged youth.

1966
Opening of Astoria Bridge,
linking Oregon and Washington,
at the mouth of the Columbia.
Ceremony marks completion of I-5 freeway,
nonstop, Washington to California.

1967
Beach Bill approved.

1968
John Day Dam, last remaining damsite
on Columbia River,
dedicated by 'Vice President' Hubert Humphrey.

1969
 Department of Environmental Quality,
Federal District Court in Sohappy v. Smith
affirms Indian treaty fishing rights in Columbia River

The American Beaver, was named Oregon state animal,
by the 1969 Legislature. Prized for its fur,
the beaver was overtrapped by early settlers,
and eliminated from much of its original range.
Through proper management and partial protection,
the beaver has been reestablished in watercourses,
throughout the state,
and remains an important economic asset.

Capitol Wings Addition completed.

won restoration of trust relationship.

Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,
reaffirmed.

Congress lists the Oregon Trail,
as a National Historic Trail.

Federal District Court in Kimball v. Callahan,
affirms Klamath Indian hunting and
fishing rights, within former reservation.

Congress creates new Siletz Reservation.

Mt. St. Helens, erupts with cataclysmic force,
in Southwestern Washington,
devastating 200 sq. miles of popular forestland.
This triggered destructive ash, floods,
mud flows, and river silt. The busy Columbia River,
is temporarily closed,
to deep-draft ships at Portland and Vancouver.

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, establishes Rajneeshpuram.

1982
Cow Creek Band, of Upper Umpqua Indians,
win restoration of trust relationship.

is the first woman justice of

Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde,
