The three DeAutremont
brothers, in what was called
the nation's last great
train robbery,
dynamited the Southern
Pacific's Gold Special,
when it passed through
a tunnel in
The Siskiyou Mountians,
near Ashland.
In fact, the train carried
no gold. Four
trainmen were killed,
but the brothers
escaped into the mountians
and were not captured
until four years later.
It was Oregon's most
sensational criminal
case.

Camp Tillamook was started

of three old barracks buildings,

This work/study camp,

upon Dr. John McLoughlin,
the honorary title of
"Father of Oregon",

great contributions,
to the early development
of the Oregon Country.

arts in education organization.
Young Audiences work
is multi-disciplinary,
embracing all art forms.

Mark O. Hatfield, becomes
the new govener of Oregon,
on January 17.

Maurine Neuberger,
Oregon's first woman
to be elected to U.S. Senate;
3rd in U.S.

Freeway completed, connecting
Salem and Portland.
1962
October 12 (Columbus
Day),
storm causes extensive
damage.
Since then, known as
The Columbus Day Storm.
1963
Heceta Head Lighthouse,
turned on in 1894.
One of the most beautiful
lighthouses and settings,
and the most powerful
marine light,
on the Oregon Coast,
1.2 million candlepower.
Last keeper at the lighthouse
was Ossie Allik,
who had the distinction
of being the last keeper,
at Tillamook and Heceta
Head.
He turned the lights
off July 20, 1963,
when it became automated.

Death penalty abolished.

Another work/study camp,
was built on State Parks
land on the mid-Oregon
coast near Florence in
1965.
This program initially
was used to serve
academically challenged
youth.

Opening of Astoria Bridge,
linking Oregon and Washington,

The American Beaver,
was named Oregon state animal,
by the 1969 Legislature.
Prized for its fur,
the beaver was overtrapped
by early settlers,
and eliminated from much
of its original range.
Through proper management
and partial protection,
the beaver has been reestablished
in watercourses,
throughout the state,
and remains an important
economic asset.
