A disease of the bowel (colon). The lining of the bowel becomes inflamed causing pain, bleeding and watery diarrhoea. The disease is a chronic condition. This means it is not really curable but it tends to come and go. People who have had ulcerative colitis for a long time (more than 10 years) have a higher chance of developing cancer of the bowel than people without this disease.
